Rare! La Poême 1996 Lancome Promotional Love Poem Cuff
Rare! La Poême 1996 Lancome Promotional Love Poem Cuff
Rare! La Poême 1996 Lancome Promotional Love Poem Cuff created for the launch of the perfume Poême in 1996. Featuring a freeform Byzantine design with an ancient artefact appeal, and the most beautiful inscribed love poem (Lines by Paul Eluard - please see notes below). The rich matte gold graduated cuff has two irregular openings, adding to its unique and artisanal aesthetic. It is stamped inside 'Lancôme Paris Poême' and would suit a small to medium wrist measuring 17.5cm internal circumference, and 3.8cm at its widest point and it weighs 85.5g. A beautiful vintage statement and romantic design for Lancome.
It is inscribed with the poem: "Je t'aime, tu es comme la mer, tu berces les étoiles. Il n'y pas une goutte de nuit dans tes yeux, tu es le grand soleil qui me monte à la tête".
which translates as: "I love you, you are like the sea, you rock the stars. There is not a drop of night in your eyes, you are the great sun that rises to my head "
The inscription appears to be a composite of lines from two poems by Paul Éluard, a prominent French poet associated with the Surrealist movement, who also wrote the poem "Liberté".
1. 'Prête aux baisers résurrecteurs' (Ready for Resurrecting Kisses):
The line "Tu es comme la mer tu berces les étoiles" translates to "You are like the sea, you rock the stars."
This poem is known for its vivid imagery and sensual themes.
2. 'Je t'aime' (I Love You):
The line "Tu es le grand soleil qui me monte à la tête" translates to "You are the great sun that rises to my head."
This poem is a fervent declaration of love, celebrating the beloved's impact on the speaker's life.
The other lines in the inscription, such as "Il n'y a pas une goutte de nuit dans tes yeux" ("There is not a drop of night in your eyes"), do not directly correspond to Éluard's known works and it is likely these lines were adapted or paraphrased to complement the existing verse, creating a cohesive and romantic message.
The use of Éluard's poetry aligns with the artistic and emotional themes of Lancôme's "Poême" fragrance, enhancing the cuff's allure as a promotional piece.
